corral

This project was prompted by my friend Heather Layton. At the time, she was my instructor for senior seminar and gave me this assignment: "Create multiple books or sound pieces that weave together like the fabric you've been braiding."

These four books borrow lyrical text from songs by The Books, Soul Coughing, The Stone Roses and Explosions in the Sky. Each corral book is read aloud (beginning simultaneously) and as readers advance pages, they must be aware of other readers' parts which give cues that orchestrate the entire piece. If a cue is missed, the readers will become "stuck" without having read all of the pages. The true end of the peice is obtained when readers maintain a steady pace and remain aware of what they are both saying and hearing at the same time. This is a challenging performance that adopts the spirit of unqiue happenings each time the piece reaches an "end."

A lot of trial-by-error mapping went into the evolution of corral. Below are some of the priliminary drafts that helped determine how to layout and link the four books' content.
