While living in Gramercy Park, NYC for the winter and spring of 2005, I became infatuated with MTA and the pure notion of public, mass transit. I preferred the subway and quickly adapted to strategizing my routes each day to make the most efficient use of time and energy. I learned to walk to points along the platform where I would be able to board the train and then upon reaching my stop, exit the train arriving closest to the desired exit in that station. Some people walk the trains to achieve this shortcut too. Others tune to music, sleep, stare, knit, talk, read, beg, write...
I tried a variety of these to pass the time, especially observing.
I felt very comfortable sharing this confined space with other commuters, coming and going as they would, forced to conform to the system yet embracing the free time allotted by not needing to drive. What I appreciate most is the fact that the subway lines often isolate everyone from cell phone service; obliging people to be presently together although willingly preoccupied.
